Mission
The mission of Celebrating Lubbock Legends Foundation, Inc. is to honor and celebrate Lubbock and West Texas natives whose lifelong contributions, across all professions and walks of life, have shaped the cultural, civic, and community spirit of the region and beyond.
Barry Corbin is one of those true West Texas originals-born in Lamesa, raised in the wide-open spaces of Lubbock, and shaped by the kind of grit and good humor only the plains can produce. Over the years, folks across the country have come to know him for his steady, familiar voice and the down-home characters he brought to life in films like Urban Cowboy, No Country for Old Men, and shows like “Northern Exposure” and “Yellowstone.”
His roots run deep in the South Plains. Whether he’s talking ranching, rodeo, or just swapping stories the way only a West Texan can, Barry has always carried a piece of Lubbock with him wherever he goes.
That’s why Celebrating Lubbock Legends Foundation, Inc., in its inaugural fundraising campaign, is tipping its hat to Barry Corbin’s lifelong achievements. The Foundation aims to honor him with a round of festivities worthy of the legacy he’s built-right here where his story began. Barry was honored by Civic Lubbock in 1985 with a plaque on the West Texas Walk of Fame; however, the bulk of his career accomplishments have taken place in the years since, and he continues working his craft to this day. Barry’s the kind of legend who makes Lubbock proud and he deserves a second round of celebrations! Making a donation today will help make this important recognition possible.

Origin Story
Celebrating Lubbock Legends Foundation, Inc. was born from a simple but persistent question: What if downtown Lubbock told its own story?
Like many conversations about revitalizing downtown, the idea began with bricks, sidewalks, and storefronts. But before long, the focus shifted from buildings to people. Lubbock has never been defined solely by geography. It has been defined by the men and women who grew up in its wide-open spaces, found their voice here, and carried the spirit of West Texas far beyond the city limits.
From musicians and artists to athletes, innovators, and cultural trailblazers, Lubbockites and West Texas natives have quietly shaped American culture while the wind kept blowing at home. Their names appear on records, scoreboards, stages, and history books, yet their shared roots often remain under-celebrated in the very place that shaped them.
The Foundation emerged from the belief that honoring these legends (while they are alive) should not be confined to museums or footnotes. Their stories belong in the daily rhythm of the city, woven into public spaces, downtown experiences, and community identity. Celebrating Lubbock Legends Foundation exists to spotlight those individuals who put Lubbock on the map, not as distant icons, but as hometown heroes whose journeys began on these same streets.
By elevating their stories, the Foundation seeks to inspire pride, spark curiosity, and create a deeper connection between downtown Lubbock and the legacy that continues to define it. This is not just about looking back. It is about using Lubbock’s past brilliance as fuel for its future.
Because legends do not simply come from somewhere else.
They come from here.
